儲かると知って赤本を作ったのです。
多かったのが、印刷屋やおもちゃ屋です。
漫画家だけではなく、紙芝居を描いていた人をつかい、
書かせたといいます。
竹内オサムの「戦後マンガ50年史」に、
「週刊朝日」の1949年4月24日号からの引用が載っています。
「こういうヤミの発行所は全国に二千五百とも三千とも言われるが、～」
ヤミというのも、すごい表現です。
おもちゃ屋が一冊本を出して、それでおしまい、
というのがこれだけの数、あったというのは驚きです。
「このうち、曲がりなりにも数冊以上出版しているのは東京に六十軒、大阪に二十軒、その他あわせても百軒とは上らない。」
「大てい裏長屋か二階の間借り、表札を並べているのは良いほうで、社員の二、三人も使っているのは全国でまず十軒というところ」
とあります。
これだけの数の赤本漫画を出版する会社があったので、
最大で100冊以上が発売された月もありました。
その質も玉石混淆だったといいますが、
手塚治虫の「新宝島」のような、
日本の漫画シーンを変えてしまうほど
インパクトのある作品も生まれたのです。
