ただそれで食べていけるのか？ というと話は別です。
妻がフリーになってから10年経ちますが、10年前と今では、フリーへの支払い単価が半分になっています。大手出版社の仕事です。
妻はそれほど稼ぐつもりはないのでいいのですが、フリーの仕事だけで家族を養おう、と考えると、収入的にも時間的にも厳しくなっているのは間違いありません。
フリーへの支払いは半分になりましたら、出版社の社員編集者の給料が減っているわけではありません。
社員編集者は意に沿わない異動や、好きではない企画を担当しなくてはならないので、そういったストレスはありますが、生活を考えると待遇は安定しています。
仕事をする環境については、妻はほとんど自宅でやっています。本当にパソコン一台です。特に高スペックではないですが、10万円は超えるものを使っています。やはり、さくさく動かないと、ストレスがたまります。プリンターとスキャナーも使いますのが、量販店で売っている普通のものです。
たまに取材の立ち合いもありますが、月に一回ぐらいです。コロナ後は、インタビューの立ち合いなども、zoomを使ってするようになったりと、家からでないで仕事がやりやすくなっています。
出版社の編集者も、今後はリモートワークが増えてくるでしょう。大手出版社はリモートを推奨していて、編集者も自宅で仕事ができることが分かったのです。
フリーの編集者のいい面も悪い面も書いてきましたが、今後は、厳しくなることは間違いありません。
まず、雑誌はどんどん休刊するでしょう。実際に、KADOKAWAの「東京ウォーカー」や、朝日新聞の「アサヒカメラ」という94年続いた雑誌も休刊しました。
雑誌の実売数が減っていますし、それに比例して広告も入らなくなっています。
「この雑誌は10年後もある」
と断言できる雑誌はありません。「週刊少年ジャンプ」ですらそうです。
携わっている雑誌が休刊になれば、社員であれば他の部署に異動となります。それが編集の仕事ではなくても、リストラされない限り、給料はもらえます。
フリーはそうはいきません。雑誌の休刊＝廃業、という人もいます。特に専門誌に特化して仕事をしていた人です。「アサヒカメラ」がいい例でしょう。
webの仕事もできる人は、そちらに軸足を移すことになるでしょう。ただ、webは雑誌の編集よりもらえる額がかなり少ないです。
