私は大手出版社に10年以上勤め、
本の初版部数や重版を決めたり、
「品切れ重版未定」の
判断もしていました。
品切れ重版未定の本は買えるのか？
についても解説します。
品切れ重版未定とは
いくつかの意味があります。
1、出版社に在庫が「ない」
例として、初版が5,000部の本です。
営業部はこのように割り振ります。
・Amazonなどのネット書店———1,000部
・リアル書店（ふつうの本屋さん）—3,000部
・出版社の在庫———————-1,000部
本が発売して順調に売れたとします。
すると、Amazonやリアル書店から注文がくるので、
「出版社の在庫」から出庫します。
在庫がなくなってしまったのに、
まだまだAmazonやリアル書店には
残っていることがよくあります。
そこで重版を決められるほど売れる、
という計算ができると、
「品切れ重版待ち」になります。
重版を決められないと、
Amazonやリアル書店にたいして
「注文もらっても出庫できないよ」
という意思表示で、
「品切れ重版未定」にするのです。
2、出版社に在庫が「ある」
上の説明で、
出版社の在庫が無くなってしまった、
ということを書きました。
実は出版社は、
数百部は在庫を持っているのです。
本当に在庫がゼロになることは、
ほとんどありません。
もしもの時に備えて、持っておくのです。
たとえば、著者が講演会で本の即売をする時です。
著者に対して「在庫がないから売れません」、
とは言えないのです。
あと、大型書店からの「どうしても」、
という注文様です。
出版社も営利企業ですので、書店を選びます。
いつもよく売ってくれる大きな書店からの
「どうしても！」には対応するのです。
重版するのか？
重版の最低部数、というのがあります。
単行本だと、1,500部ぐらいです。
この1,500部が売れる、と見込みがたてば
重版をします。
ただ、いちど「品切れ重版未定」にした本を
重版することはほとんどありません。
現在、本の寿命はとても短いです。
発売して一ヵ月もあれば、
寿命は判断できてしまいます。
寿命が長い本は、出版社も過去の経験から
判断できます。
また、寿命の長い本は
単行本の発売から2、3年後に「文庫」にするので、
無理して単行本を重版しません。
絶版との違い
絶版とは、
「もうこの本を売ることはありません」
という意味です。
出版社としては、
絶版という言葉は使いたくありません。
著者にとって気持ちのいいものではないからです。
また、著者に対して絶版と伝えると、
他の出版社からその絶版にした本を
出されてしまうかもしれないからです。
ですので、10年前に発売した本で、
書店店頭にも在庫がないし、出版社の在庫もゼロ、
という本でも「品切れ重版未定」というのです。

発売してから一年ぐらいの本で
「品切れ重版未定」の場合、
大型書店の店頭には在庫があることが多いです。
どうしても欲しい場合は、
Amazonのマーケットプレイスで古本が売っています。
新品の本が欲しい場合は、
