辰巳ヨシヒロさんの自伝漫画「劇画漂流」（青林工藝社、講談社文庫）に「影」誕生のきっかけが描かれています。

話を戻します。
「劇画漂流」では、出版社の八興（日の丸文庫）から菊判の漫画を出した松本正彦さんに対し、辰巳ヨシヒロさんが羨ましがる場面があります。
当時はB6判サイズの漫画が主流でした。
菊判はA5判より少し大きいサイズなので、B6判を比較すると、菊判の方がタテで36mm、ヨコで24mmも大きいのです。
大きなサイズの紙に、迫力のある絵を辰巳ヨシヒロさんは描きたくなりました。
そこで八興の山田秀三社長に菊判で描きたいと直談判しますが、断られてしまいます。
B6判が主流だったので、菊判で出すには辰巳ヨシヒロさんはまだ実績が少なかったのです。
どうしても菊判一計を案じた辰巳ヨシヒロさんは、松本正彦さんに「合作」を提案します。
松本正彦さんとの共作であれば、山田秀三社長も納得すると考えたのです。
提案をうけた松本正彦さんは、あっさりとしています。
「カッちゃん（辰巳ヨシヒロ）と二人で合作か・・・ ぼくは別にかめへんけど」「ケッタイなやっちゃな そんなに菊判が描きたいんかいな」
といった具合で、さめた雰囲気です。
この返事をうけて辰巳ヨシヒロさんは八興に飛んでいきますが、あいにく山田秀三社長は不在でした。
そこで、八興の顧問格の漫画家・久呂田まさみさんに相談し「影」が誕生するのです。
あくまで「劇画漂流」では、辰巳ヨシヒロさんのみノリノリで動いていますが、別の本では違っています。
小学館クリエイティブ発行の「完全復刻版 影・街」の付録「『完全復刻版 影・街』読本」に二人の対談が載っています。
対談のタイトルは「草創期の劇画をめぐって」です。
松本正彦さんはこう語っています。
「僕は辰巳さんの作品を見てて、どうもやり方がよく似てるから、二人で組めば新しいものができるんじゃないかと思って誘ったんですね。」
松本正彦さんも辰巳ヨシヒロさんの実力を認め、「劇画漂流」でのさめた雰囲気とは違って合作に乗り気だったのです。
ただ、合作のきっかけはやはり辰巳ヨシヒロさんからのようです。
「僕の記憶では、合作をしようと思ったのは、とにかくA判を描きたかった。当時は実績のあった松本さんしかA判の仕事は行かなかったんです。ただ、その頃は貸本はまだB判が主流で、A版は売れたなかったらしいんですね。」
「劇画」が世の中に広まっていくきっかけとなった「影」は、辰巳ヨシヒロさん、松本正彦さんがお互いを認め合うことによって誕生したことが、この2冊からわかってきます。
