昭和40年前後に「週刊少年マガジン」で連載の経験があるようです。
ただ、あまり人気は得られず、10回で打ち切りとなってしまいました。

かなりの実力者ということに間違いありません。

出身地は北海道の霧多布（きりたっぷ）というところです。
あまり聞いたことがない地名ですよね。釧路空港から、車で2時間近くかかる、港町です。
飛行機と車を使えば、東京まで4時間ぐらいで着きますが、
モンキー・パンチさんが10代で上京した当時は、とてつもない時間がかかりました。
飛行機がない当時は、まず汽車で霧多布から函館まで丸一日かかります。
北海道を東から西まで横断するのです。現在でも8時間ぐらいかかります。
函館からは青函連絡船に乗り青森へ。青森から汽車で東京へ…

この名前を昭和40年代に使うというのは、かなり勇気のいったことでしょう。
今なら歌手の方とかが英語の名前でバンドを組むのが普通ですが、
当時は奇抜だったと思います。

名付け親は、モンキー・パンチを発掘し、商業誌でデビューさせた恩人、
双葉社の清水文人編集長です。
清水編集長に発掘され、デビュー作は「漫画ストーリー」（現在は廃刊）という雑誌に
掲載されました。
デビューから数作は「マニア・ぐるうぷ」というペンネームで書いていました。
しかも、マニア・ぐるうぷの後に3人の名前が書かれていたのです。
それは、ムタ栄二 フジノリヲ 摩周仙二の3つの名前です。
本当に3人で漫画を書いていたのではなく、
誰が書いているのか分からなくしてしまおう、という
モンキー・パンチさんの思いだったようです。

「ルパン三世」の絵柄は今見てもアメリカのコミック、という感じがして
独特ですが、当時（昭和40年代）は衝撃的な絵だったようです。
そんな衝撃的な、アメリカ感が満載の画風を活かすために、
清水編集長が「モンキー・パンチ」という名前を考えたのです。
「パンチ」は風刺画、という意味ですが、「モンキー」の由来は
明らかになっていません。
ただ、この名前を付けたことによって、「ルパン三世」の世界観を
読む人が勝手に増幅しているように思います。
「ルパン三世」が生まれた理由
