出版社の採用試験は難関です。
大手の小学館・集英社・講談社でも20名ほどの新卒採用枠に、2,000人以上が応募します。100倍以上の倍率です。
書類選考で半分以下にされ、筆記試験でさらに半分に、面接も5回はあります。
ここまで厳しいと、もはや「運」という方もいます。私も同感です。
ただ、大手出版社で面接官を担当していた立場からいうと、面接で落ちる人には傾向があります。
1-自信がなくおどおどしている
講談社の場合、2020年度の応募総数は2,712名で、書類選考と筆記試験をパスして面接までたどりついたのは600名です。5人に1人。
これだけですごいのに、なぜか自信がなくおどおどしている学生がいます。
憧れの大手出版社の面接までたどり着き、憧れの仕事をしている社員の前で話すのは誰でも緊張します。
緊張はいいのですが、自信がない態度の人は魅力がありません。面接は「人」対「人」の会話です。おどおどじている人とは友達になれませんよね。面接官と友達のように話せとはいいませんが、対等な気持ちで面接にのぞみましょう。
「人は話し方が9割」というのは本当です。
どれだけ素晴らしい実績があるひとも、話し方によってはその実績に「？」がついてしまうのです。
堂々とふるまいましょう！
2-「本が好き」が伝わらない
出版社に応募する人のほとんどが、本や雑誌が好きなのは当然です。
面接官も本が好きです。
どれだけ好きなのか？ ということをうまく言葉にできる練習をしましょう。
「私は本で人生が変わりました」とさらっと言ってしまうと、たくさんの人数がうける一次面接ではさらっと流されてしまうかもしれません。具体性がないので、面接官も会話の糸口がつかめないのです。
面接は会話をつうじて、面接官が応募者のことを知るためにあります。
「まったくもてなかった私は「メンズノンノ」を読んでファッションを勉強し、学んだとおりに洋服をアルバイトをして買って、一歩を踏み出すことができました。私も読む人の人生を変える企画を作りたい」と言った方が、具体性があります。

3-応募する会社のことを調べていない
出版社に入れるならそこそこの規模のところならどこでもいい、というのが本音でしょう。私もそうでした。
たくさんの会社を受けると、すべての会社について調べることはなかなか大変です。
それでも面接前には、最低限、調べておくべきことがあります。
図書館にこもって、その会社の主要な雑誌と新刊の本、数年前のベストセラー、ちょっと古い10年ぐらい前の本を読みましょう。
ちょっと古い本、というのが重要です。面接官も覚えていなかったり、知らなかったりする本の話が面接の中ででると、印象づけられます。
私も営業系の部署に配属されていたときは、自社の本と雑誌のすべてをひととおり手で触れていました。それでも一年前の本ですら、「こんな本うちにあったっけ？」と忘れてしまっているのです。
面接官も覚えていないような本 ＝ ベストセラーではない本を読んでおけば、会社に興味をもってくれている、と面接官は思ってくれます。
4-大学時代に何もしていない
大学時代に胸を張れるほどなにかをしたひとは、多くありません。
間違えないでほしいのは、「何もしていない人はいない」ということです。
箱根駅伝に出ました、起業していました、という人には負けた気がする応募者がたくさんいると思います。
ですが、このぐらいの経歴の人はじつはたくさん応募しています。面接官も慣れてしまっているところがあります。
面接官は「素晴らしい経歴」より、普通の生活の中で人間関係に苦しんでいたけど乗り越えたエピソードの方が、親近感を抱きます。
「箱根駅伝にでるために、毎日の練習を血を吐くほど努力しました」ということより、「部活では全国大会にはいけず、部員同士の仲も険悪になりました。けどそれを乗り越えました」というほうが、人間的に魅力に感じます。
結果は出ていなくても、「人」と「人」が一緒に何かをするなかで人間関係に苦しんだことがある人は多いでしょう。その苦しみをどう乗り越えたのか？ ということにこそ、人は興味を持ちます。
面接官は会社員です。有名な編集者もです。会社員は、仕事ができるできない以前に、社内の人間関係に悩みます。学生時代は友人を選べましたが、同僚や上司は選べないからです。
「何もしていない人はいない」
ということを忘れないでください。人の興味をひきつけるエピソードは、どんな人でももっています。
5-フィーリングが合わない
面接官は、一緒に働きたい人を選びます。
どれだけ会社に貢献するか？ という視点ももちろんありますが、この学生ならベストセラーを編集してくれる、という期待を抱かせる学生はいません。
面接官をやっていると、ぱっと見でちょっと違うなと感じることがあります。話しているとさらにあります。
当たり前です。お金を稼いで自立している社会人と、親の庇護下にある学生で話が合うわけがありません。
ではどう対応すればいいのか？
学生時代に大人と接する機会を増やしましょう！
できれば出版にまつわる業界でアルバイトをするのがいいです。業界の空気を身にまとえるからです。
どうすれば大人に嫌われないしゃべり方や立ち振る舞いができるのか、ということは大人と接することでしか身に付きません。
同じ出版社の中でも、編集部によって人種がまったく違ってきます。極端な例ですが、徳間書店では「アサヒ芸能」と「アニメージュ」という両極端な雑誌があります。両誌の編集者はタイプがまったく異なります。
「アサヒ芸能」の編集者のイメージはちょっと怖い、「アニメージュ」はちょっとオタクなイメージでしょう。面接ではどちらの編集者がでてくるかわかりません。
いろいろなタイプの大人と出会える環境にいましょう。
