「ドカベン」や「あぶさん」など、
野球漫画で一時代をきずいた水島新司さん。
そのデビューについて、中野晴行さんの
「手塚治虫と路地裏のマンガたち」に書かれています。
1939（昭和14）年4月10日に、新潟で生まれました。
同い年の漫画家は、ちばてつやさん、中沢 啓治さん、森田 拳次さん、
佐藤まさあきさん、矢口高雄さん、水野英子さんがいます。
実家は魚屋でしたが、中学を卒業すると水産者の問屋に就職しました。
ただ実家が貧しく、仕事が終わってから家業を手伝っていました。
ふたつの仕事をかけつも忙しいなか、
漫画を描いていました。
デビューへの転機は、
貸本出版社・八興（日の丸文庫）の「影」という短編詩の
コンクールに入賞したのです。
「影」第一回新人漫画コンクール・新人賞 第二席です。
「影」、辰巳ヨシヒロさん、松本正彦さんが中心になってつくり、
さいとう・たかをさんや佐藤まさあきさんも描いていた
伝説の漫画誌です。
第二席の入賞も本人にとってはうれしかったでしょう。
実力的にはトップだったのですが、
新人としては完成度が高すぎて二席となったのです。
出版社の八興は大阪にあります。
授賞式で八興の山田秀三社長に、
大阪にでてくることをすすめられます。
この提案に水島新司さんは、のります。
貧しい家族の貴重な働き手ですが、
何とか説得しました。
条件があり、一年たって漫画家としてどうにも
ならなかったら新潟に戻る、ということです。
大阪での住まいは、八興の倉庫の一角を改造した部屋でした。
1957（昭和32）年、18歳です。
住み込みですので、編集の雑用をこなしながら、
自分の漫画を描くという、またもや二重生活でした。
3年続きました。
独立できたのは1960（昭和35）年、21歳です。
あらたな住処は「日之出荘」です。
トキワ荘と同じように、何人かの漫画家が住むアパートでした。
影丸譲也さんもいたようです。
日之出荘でデビュー作「わが家のホープさん」を描きあげるのです。
その後、漫画家として順調に作品を積み重ね、
東京に出ていきます。
「ドカベン」や「球道くん」「男どアホウ甲子園」など、
野球漫画の第一人者となっていきます。
2014年には旭日小綬章に選ばれました。
「ドカベン」は「週刊少年チャンピオン」での連載が、
2018年6月28日発売号で終わりました。
なんと連載は46年にわたり、
単行本は205巻でました。
最終回の欄外に、
「水島新司先生の次回作にご期待ください」と
書かれていました。
80歳を超えていますが、
同い年のちばてつやさんも「ひねもすのたり日記」を
「ビッグコミック」に連載しています。
