サンデーとマガジンは同じ日に創刊しました
小学館の「週刊少年サンデー」と、講談社の「週刊少年マガジン」は同日に創刊しました。
1959年（昭和34）3月17日、火曜日です。
現在、両誌の発売日は水曜日ですが、当初は火曜日でした。
書籍や雑誌は発売日とは別に、発行日があります。
創刊号のサンデーの発行日は4月5日、マガジンは3月26日です。
発売日は同じなのに、発行日は異なるのです。
この理由は、両者の腹の探り合いです。
マガジン側が、サンデーより一日も早く発売したいと画策し、サンデーもマガジンより遅い発売日にはできない、と攻防があったのです。
サンデーは当初、5月に発売の予定でした。
それを知ったマガジン側が発売日を繰り上げてきたのです。
値段も同様です。
両誌はともに、大日本印刷での印刷でした。
同じ印刷会社を使っているので情報はある程度、筒抜けだったのでしょう。
マガジンは40円だったのに対し、サンデーはマガジンの決定を知り、30円の定価にしたのです。
サンデーとマガジンの創刊時と現在の部数
創刊号の発行部数は、サンデーが30万部、マガジンが20.5万部と、サンデーの圧勝でした。
同日に発売した両誌ですが、サンデーの方が創刊に向けてはやくに動き出していました。
つまり、人気のある作家を揃えることができたことにより、部数の差が出たのです。
サンデーの創刊号の連載漫画ラインナップ
サンデーの創刊号は、手塚治虫さんを起用できたことが大きなトピックでした。

現在はあまりなじみがありませんが、寺田ヒロオさんも「トキワ荘」の作家の兄貴分で、当時は藤子不二雄さんや石ノ森章太郎さん、赤塚不二雄さんより一歩抜きんでた人気漫画家でした。
表紙は長嶋茂雄さんでした。

マガジンはサンデーに出遅れたので、企画で勝負をしました。
豪華な懸賞プレゼントや別冊付録の漫画を3冊付けたのです。

表紙は後の横綱の朝汐太郎でした。（マガジンの創刊時は大関）
ちなみに、藤子不二雄さんはサンデーに連載を依頼された直後、マガジンからも依頼がきました。
週刊誌で2本の連載は無理なので、断ったのです。
石ノ森章太郎さんもマガジンに声をかけられました。
そこで創刊号に合わせて原稿を持っていきましたが、採用されなかったのです。
部数の推移
創刊合以降は、両誌で抜きつ抜かれつの部数競争をしました。
1970年頃にマガジンが100万部を超え、サンデーは80万部前後と後塵を拝していました。
マガジンは1991年に250万部、1998年に445万部と同誌の最高部数を記録しました。
2000年代に入ると400万部を割り、2010年には150万部、現在は71万部です。
サンデーは1983年に最高部数の228万部を記録しました。
2000年には150万部、2010年には68万部まで落ち込み、現在は27万部とかなり厳しい状況です。
ちなみに、ジャンプは1995年にギネス記録の653万部を記録し、現在は169万部です。
スマホ全盛の現在、漫画雑誌がこれから伸びていくことはなかなか考えられませんが、サンデーが休刊にならないことを祈るばかりです。
