寺田ヒロオさんといえば、
高潔の漫画家です。
「スポーツマン金太郎」で
第一回講談社児童漫画賞を受賞し、
「暗闇五段」は千葉真一主演でドラマになりました。
「週刊少年サンデー」の創刊号から、
手塚治虫や藤子不二雄と並んで
連載を持ちました。
この人気作家が、子どものためにならない
劇画などの漫画の台頭により、
漫画界に嫌気がさして筆を折ってしまったのです。
寺田ヒロオが理想とした雑誌が
「漫画少年」でした。
1947（昭和22）年12月から1955（昭和30）年10月に
累計101冊、学童社から発行された漫画雑誌です。
手塚治虫が「ジャングル大帝」や「火の鳥」を
連載し、たくさんの漫画家が投稿欄から
巣立ちました。
藤子不二雄、石ノ森章太郎、赤塚不二夫などです。
寺田ヒロオもその一人でした。
この「漫画少年」が廃刊後、国会図書館に
3冊しか残っていないことを知った
寺田ヒロオは、「『漫画少年』史」を
自費出版で刊行します。
内容は、
第一章 代表作品復刻集
第二章 思い出の文集
第三章 全巻作品目録集
です。
寺田ヒロオ自身も、数十冊しか持って
いませんでした。
足りない分を関係者から借りて編集したのです。
編集作業中は、冬にもかかわらず、
大事な「漫画少年」を火事で燃やしてはいけないと、
ストーブをつけなかったほどです。
この寺田ヒロオの「漫画少年」への
純粋であつい思いが、
「あとがき」の文章に表れています。
この本は「漫画少年」の資料です。
復刻本ではありません。
休刊後二十五年たった「漫画少年」が、
散逸消滅するのを防ぎたい一心で、
緊急に企画刊行いたしましたので、
不備な点も多く、
読者のご不満も強いことでしょう。
しかしこの本が出ることで、
この「戦後最高の児童文化財」が再認識され、
その保存保護が、
真剣に考慮されると思います。
またこの本が呼び水となり、
もっと豊富でもっと正確な「漫画少年」
関係図書が続刊され、
復刻のみか、
復刊の動きさえ起こるかもしれません。
だが、私の真の期待は、
若者の「温故知新」です。
「昔は良い本があった」
「今はどうだ」
「私たちの手で゛漫少“を超えるものをつくろう」
そういう声が強く高く上り、
近い将来、
開花結実することを、
心から祈ります。
「『漫画少年』史」の発行は、
1981（昭和56）年4月２日です。
寺田ヒロオの願いは通じ、
1983年（昭和58）年には
国書刊行会から「漫画少年」の復刻版が
発売されました。
