トキワ荘の兄貴分の寺田ヒロオことテラさん。
藤子不二雄Ａさんの「まんが道」で、
優しさと、新漫画党の党首で皆をまとめる姿が描かれています。
今回、テラさんのインタビューが掲載されている
「えすとりあ」を入手しました。
断筆の理由と、テラさん自身の性格について、
本人が語っています。
貴重な資料ですので、一部、引用します。
テラさんは、トキワ荘のメンバーのなかでも、
いちばん人気のある漫画家でした。
1959（昭和34）に創刊した「週刊少年サンデー」（小学館）では、
創刊号から連載を持ったほどなのです。

・「スポーツマン金太郎」—寺田ヒロオ

断筆の理由
なぜ人気があるのに断筆したのか。
それは、劇画などの台頭で、漫画の表現がどぎつくなって
いったことにあります。
私のブログから、引用します。
劇画は殺人のシーンや、子どもが見るに堪えない場面が
多く出てくるのです。
テラさんは、この時代の流れが許せなかったのです。
当然、テラさんが連載している漫画雑誌にも劇画が掲載されます。
そこでテラさんがとった行動は、編集者を呼び出し、
劇画の連載をやめさせようとしたのです。
編集者、そして出版社としては人気のある劇画作品の
連載を終わりにすることはできません。
この判断を聞いたテラさんは、
なんと自ら、連載をやめてしまうのです。
「えすとりあ」では、こうも語っています。
ー寺田さんはなぜ漫画をやめたんですか？
「やめたわけではありません。
僕には他の職業はないもの。
面白い漫画を描けないから描かないし、
描けなくなったと思っているから注文が来ないし。
描けると思えば、何時でも描きますよ。」
と、一見、劇画や他の漫画の表現については触れていません。
また、こうも言っています。
ー自分の描きたい雑誌が、今は無いという事を書いていましたね。
「それも一つは有るんですが、他の人は、
自分の気に入った雑誌が無くても、
皆それぞれに努力して描いているんですからね。
要するに僕の場合は、
才能が乏しいくせに、ひどい怠け者なんですよ。」
編集者にたいして、残酷な内容の漫画の連載を
やめるよう言い、そのやり取りの中で断筆したという話も、
よく言われていることです。
それについても言っています。
「それじゃあカッコよすぎますよね。
何んと言ったって商業雑誌に描かせて
もらっているんですから。」
ただテラさんは、編集者から漫画の中身について
注文をつけられ、自分の信念とは相いれない内容に
してまで、人気を取りに行くことがゆるせなかったようです。
テラさんの性格
テラさんは、漫画の内容がより過激になり、
子どものためにならない、それが許せなかったのです。
時代の流れを許容して、受け入れていく人がほとんどですが、
テラさんは違いました。
自身の性格について、「えすとりあ」でこう言っています。
「～僕位憂鬱な人間って居ないだろうと思う位。
ただ青春時代が憂鬱だって言うそんな感じじゃなくて、
本当に今でも（インタビュー時51歳）、
恐らく一生そうでしょうね。
気が小さくて苦労性と言うか、
悪い方に考え込んだり俺はダメだなあってね。」
トキワ荘時代の生活についても、
藤子不二雄さんや石ノ森章太郎さん、赤塚不二夫さんと
話をすることを
「とにかく腹の皮が捩れる程笑うわけですよ」
「ほとんど毎日、誰かの部屋で駄弁っているわけでね、
それが充実していると言うか、楽しかったですよ。」
と言っていますが、その真逆のことも語っています。
「だいたい僕にはトキワ荘時代の楽しい思い出や、
面白い事件なんて、ほとんど無いんですよ。」
新漫画党の仲間が聞いたら、悲しくなるでしょう。
簡単に言ってはいけませんが、
テラさんはとても神経の細やかなひとだったのです。
仲間が金欠の時に部屋代を貸したり、
赤塚不二夫さんが漫画家をやめるつもりだと、
相談した際にアドバイスをして当座のお金を貸したのは
有名な話です。
お金についても語っています。
「皆に金を貸すようになると、
月末の部屋代集金日には、
皆の分を払える位、貯金を下ろして来たり、
誰が何時来てもよいように、
ある程度は手許に置いたり、
めったに借りに来たりはしないのですが、
そのたまに有るかも知れない人の事で
心配するなんて変な事なんだけれど、
それが性格だから、しょうがないのです。」
引用が長くなりましたが、楽しい生活があったことも
認めつつ、心配や憂鬱がそれを上回ったのでしょう。
断筆後の漫画執筆への意欲
「えすとりあ」のなかで、
テラさんの前向きな話もあり、ほっとします。
それは、「漫画少年」と同じような雑誌があれば、
また描くのか？ という質問に対してです。
「描きますよ。
採用してもらおうと必死になるでしょうね。」
短い言葉ですが、
テラさんが漫画を嫌いになったわけではないことが
わかり、うれしくなります。
