日本の漫画の父であり神と言われる手塚治虫さん。
1989年2月9日に60歳で亡くなるまでに生み出した作品タイトル数は約700で、15万ページを超えます。
日本のアニメの父としても有名です。
天才でもあり変人とも言われ、特徴のあるエピソードにはことかきません。

手塚治虫は多くの漫画家に影響を与えた天才です
戦争が終わって間もない1947年（昭和22）に発売された「新宝島」（漫画：手塚治虫、原作・構成：酒井七馬）がなければ、日本の漫画は現在の隆盛がなかった言われているほどの作品です。
「新宝島」は多くの漫画家に影響を与えました。
藤子不二雄の二人や石ノ森章太郎さん、赤塚不二夫さんなどは、「新宝島」に衝撃を受けて本格的に漫画家を目指すようになったと言っています。
「新宝島」はそれまでの漫画と違い、映画のようなコマ割り技法を用い、ダイナミックな表現でこれまでの漫画と一線を画すものでした。
当時の子供たちの多くは、映画が最大の娯楽でした。
藤子不二雄の二人も石ノ森章太郎さんも、映画のマニアでした。
「新宝島」を読み、映画と同じことが漫画でできることを知ったのです。
また、当時の漫画は、面白くて笑えるものという凝り固まった概念がありました。
手塚治虫さんは漫画に「悲劇の要素を持ってきた」のです。
漫画が「楽しい」だけのものから、ドラマ的要素が入るようになったのです。
「新宝島」以前の漫画は、「のらくろ」（島田啓三さん）のような漫画に代表されていました。
手塚治虫さんが「新宝島」を島田啓三さんに見せたところ「むだなコマが多い。新宝島は200ページもあるけど、自分なら8ページで描ける」と言われたそうです。
実際にその当時の漫画は、雑誌の中で大きな扱いではありませんでした。
読み物の方が人気があったのです。
ページ数も、漫画一作品につき4ページが普通でした。
8ページでも長編と言われていたのです。
「新宝島」の200ページは、まさに大長編です。
アメリカのマスコミで言われていることは、日本でコミックが流行り漫画の文化が育ったのは、若い才能がみんな漫画家になったから、です。
アメリカでは若い人が映画の道を目指しました。
日本の若い才能が漫画の道を目指したのは、手塚治虫さんがいたからです。
「新宝島」が実際にどれだけ売れたかは、出版元の育英出版もすでになく、はっきりとわかっていません。
40万部とも80万部とも言われています。
初版の美品であれば500万円の値がつくという、日本で最も高い漫画と言われてます。
革新的な漫画を描いただけでなく、その数も圧倒的でした。
冒頭に15万ページを描いたと書きましたが、漫画家生活を40年とざっくり見積もっても、月間300ページ以上を描いていたことになります。
しかもこれは漫画だけのページ数です。
日本で初めての本格的な、毎週30分放送するアニメは、手塚治虫さんが手がけました。
自身が経営する「手塚プロダクション」に動画部を設立したのです。
「鉄腕アトム」が日本初の毎週30分放映するアニメとなりますが、これは動画部を「虫プロダクション」と改名した会社が制作したのです。
漫画家がアニメーション会社を設立し、実際にアニメを作ったのです！
いまでは普通の「毎週30分のアニメ」ですが、当時としては考えられないことでした。
手塚治虫さんが尊敬するディズニーのアニメのような「フルアニメーション」では毎週の放映は不可能でした。
そこで手塚さんは「リミテッド・アニメ」といって、絵の枚数を減らす技法を生み出したのです。
この「鉄腕アトム」の放映がなければ、毎週テレビでアニメが見られる世界は、もしかしたら今もないことなのかもしれません。
手塚治虫さんは漫画とアニメの新しい世界を作った天才ですが、それ以外にも驚くべきことがあります。
医師免許を持ち、医学博士なのです。
大阪帝国大学附属医学専門部を卒業しています。
漫画の連載を持ちながら学校にも通い、そして医学博士のとなったのです。
博士号を取ったときの論文は「精子の電子顕微鏡研究」です。
想像を絶する天才です。
手塚治虫の変人さを表す特徴的なエピソード
神様と崇められる手塚治虫さんですが、人間的なエピソードも多くあります。
手塚治虫さんの会社「虫プロ商事」が発行した「COM」という漫画雑誌がありました。
その「COM」に、石ノ森章太郎さんに連載をお願いしました。
「ジュン」という作品名で、絵とコマの流れで世界観を表した実験的な作品でした。
この作品について読者が手塚治虫の感想を求めたところ、手紙で否定的な返信をしたのです。
「あれは漫画ではない」といった内容です。
その読者が手塚治虫さんの批判的な意見を、石ノ森章太郎さんに伝えてしまったのです。
石ノ森章太郎さんは「COM」の連載を辞めると、編集部に伝えます。
事実を知った手塚治虫さんはすぐさま、石ノ森章太郎さんのもとに謝罪にいきます。
「自分で自分が嫌になる。なぜあんなことを言ってしまったのか」と言うのです。
石ノ森章太郎さんの才能と実力に、嫉妬したのでしょう。
自分のことを慕う後輩の作品にすら嫉妬してしまう手塚治虫さん。
神様と言われても、人間なのです。
また、違った角度からの変人エピソードですが、いきなり編集者やアシスタントにわがままを言うことがありました。
「あのお店で売っているカップラーメンがないと描けない」
「あのアメリカのチョコレートがないとアイデアが浮かばない」
「あのペンがないとどうしても描けない」
などなどです。
手塚治虫さんは移動中の車内や飛行機の中でも、漫画を描ける方です。
ご自身の結婚式の日も、控室で挙式の直前まで描いていたといいます。
そんな方がペンはまだしも、カップラーメンやチョコレートにこだわる理由がわかりません。
編集者はアシスタントの方は、手塚治虫さんの何らかの意思表示だったのではないか？ と言っていますが、本人にしか本当のところはわかりません。
