手塚治虫さんがウォルト・ディズニーの
影響を受けていたことは、
よく知られていている話です。
ディズニーの「バンビ」について、
「ボクのまんが記」に書いています。
「いちばん多く見たのは『バンビ』で、
夢中になって、
朝から晩まで映画館にすわっていました。」
日本での公開は1951（昭和26）年5月26日です。
手塚治虫さんは1928年（大正14）年11月3日
生まれなので、22歳ときです。
すでに漫画家でデビューしていて、
「新宝島」は1947（昭和22）年に発売、
「漫画少年」（学童社）で「ジャングル大帝」の
連載がスタートしたのが1950（昭和25）年です。
宝塚の実家と東京のアパートを、
行き来していましたす。
「おなかがへっても夜になると、
すぐ横のガードの下にある木賃宿にとまって、
ひと晩じゅうシラミにかまれながら、
あくる朝、
また映画館へとびこみました。」
合計で何回見たかも書かれています。
「全部で何回見たかおぼえていませんが、
あとでまた見たのも合わせると
百二、三十回も見たと思います。」
さらに、ディズニーへの想いが
「ブラック・ジャック創作秘話」5巻にもあります。
「私のディズニーへの思い入れは、
私の絵を見ていただければ、
それでもういまさら述べる必要もない。」
とまで言っているのです。
では、実際に手塚治虫さんと
ウォルド・ディズニーは会ったことがあるのか？
これについても、「手塚治虫―僕はマンガ家」に
書いてあります。
昭和40年にニューヨークで世界博があり、
手塚治虫さんは新聞社の特派員として参加しました。
会場をスケッチして、
日本に送ったといいます。
そこにディズニー社が展示をしていました。
「なんとかしてディズニーに会いたい。
それまで何度もディズニー・プロを訪れたが、
ディズニー氏はいつも留守である。
ふと見ると、ペプシコーラ館の横に大きな
ひとだかりがしている。
誰かが挨拶している。
あっ、あの顔は――ディズニーだ！」
40歳ちかい男が、これだけはしゃぐのです。
そして実際に、挨拶をします。
「思いきってぼくは近づいて、
『日本から来ました。
アニメーションを作っています』と、
話しかけた。
『アストロ・ボーイ』を作っています」
当時、「鉄腕アトム」がアメリカでも
放送されていたのです。
するとウォルト・ディズニーは、
「『アストロ・ボーイ』？
知っています。
良い作品です。
これからの子供達は、
宇宙に眼を向けなければならない。
わたしも、ああいうものを手がけて
みたいと思っています。」
という会話でした。
手塚治虫さんとその作品を知っていたのです。
ウォルト・ディズニーに会ったのは、
これが最初で最後でした。
日本では漫画でもアニメでも天下を取っていた
時期に、これだけ素直になれるところが
手塚治虫さんの素晴らしさです。
