漫画、アニメの神様である手塚治虫さん。
奥様の手塚悦子さんによると、初めて手塚治虫さんが泣く姿をみたのは、学童社の創業者・加藤謙一さんが亡くなったときでした。
加藤さんと手塚さんの出会いは、昭和25年です。
手塚治虫さんは、昭和21年に漫画家としてデビューします。
「新宝島」（育英出版）を昭和22年に出し、40万部を売る大ベストセラーになりました。
その後も「ロスト・ワールド」や「メトロポリス」といったヒット作を出し、大阪のスター漫画家として、満を持して東京にでていきました。
ただ、東京では簡単にはいきませんでした。
漫画を持ち込んだ出版社では、絵柄について文句を言われたりします。
学童社の加藤謙一さんは違いました。
手塚治虫さんが持っていた「ジャングル大帝」の原稿をみて、「漫画少年」への連載を決めたのです。
二人は、漫画家と編集者だけの関係ではありませんでした。
加藤謙一さんは、手塚治虫さんに手紙を何本も書きました。
手塚治虫さんも、こんなところまで見てくれているのか、と感じりいりました。
加藤謙一さんの四男の丈夫さんはこう言っています。
「ビジネスライクな関係ではなく、すごくいい息子のように見ていた」
悦子さんはこういっています。
「加藤謙一さんのことは、自分にとって『東京のお父さん』だとよく言っておりました。親のように甘えて何でもお話ができたと。手塚が上京する前、学童社は東京でいちばん心が安らぐばしょだったそうです。」
手塚治虫さんは当初、大阪と東京を行き来する生活でしたが、東京では学童社で原稿を描きました。
トキワ荘に入ることになったのも、加藤謙一さんの長男が住んでいてすすめられたからです。
加藤家の家族全員と、付き合いがあったのです。
昭和49年、加藤謙一さんが無くなりました。
訃報を聞いた手塚治虫さんは、泣き崩れました。
葬儀ではなんと、受付を担当したのです。
当時、46歳です。
前年に虫プロが倒産しましたが、「ブラック・ジャック」で完全復活を果たした「神」が、です。
加藤丈夫さんがこう書かれています。
「葬儀の時も、式場に入ってくださいと何度もお願いしたのに、私はここで受付をやるんだと言ってお立ちになっていました。」
